Working for other people is not exactly my favourite past-time. In fact, when I decided to go for it a few years ago and become self-employed, I thought the whole concept of working for others was behind me. However, as the whole credit crunch thingy keeps strangling the country, and with too many bills to even cope with keep coming through my letterbox, it is obviously time to get moving.
Last Wednesday the weekly job listings in the paper was shoved in to my hands by father. I took the publication quietly with a cup of coffee, and slowly red every advert in the bloody thing - circling anything and everything that I was able to do with my eyes closed as I went. I applied to most things (except the cleaning jobs), and have now been waiting for replies for a week - nothing has come back yet.
I also decided to ask around to see if there were any positions not yet been advertised, and found 4 ‘bar work’ / ’shop help’ type jobs of which I applied for too. Again, no replies. In fact this week of ‘job hunting’ has been pathetic - with lots of CVs and applications being sent off, with nothing in return. Of course, it does take time to asses all of the applications you have received from advertising a job position, I understand that. But I suppose the biggest mystery of them all is trying to work out the reason for spending the time to produce a CV in the first place.
Obviously, a CV or Resume is supposed to be a record of an individual to be sent out to apply for positions - we were taught that much at school. However, what really miffs me off is that every job you apply for - even driving a van for the local newsagents early in the mornings - requires you to fill out an application form. Why? If all the information that you are going to fill out in a form is already nicely produced in a CV - why waste both your (the job advertiser) and mine (the applicant) time and resources? Also, surely taking the time to send an applicant the form itself is wasting money, with postage and employing someone to stick the bloody thing in an envelope and licking the flap.
Surely, in an ideal world, people would apply by CV automatically if they were interested in the position and hope for the best, without having to clock-up pointless minutes repeating the same name and address for an application form to be sent, that they had just given out to the previous job application.
The world is slowly going mad… I blame GM Crops! :oP
